ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING DIVISION

Introduction

The world is facing complex environmental problems such as noise, global warming and dioxin emission. Such urgent problems can only be overcome by the cooperative effort of the people from all the industrial fields. Thus, our Environmental Engineering Division is a union of following four sub-divisions.

  1. Vibration and noise control technology
  2. Refuse Processing Technology
  3. Air and Water Preservation Technology
  4. Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology
As to exchanging information between the people involved in these environmental problems, "Environmental Engineering Symposium" is held once a year in Kawasaki, Japan. The symposium collects more than one hundred papers all over Japan. English presentation is also accepted. Refer to the following program for further details.

All the people who are interested in environmental engineering are welcome.

Vibration and noise control technology

The Department investigates noise and vibration problems while considering their effects on human lives. The scope of work of the Department is clearly shown by the names of its various expert groups including "Mechanical Vibration and Sound Control", "Agreeable Sound Environment", "Mechanical Noise and Noise Quality Improvement Technology", and by the session titles of the environmental engineering symposium such as "Comfortable Sound and Vibration Environment" and "Prediction and Control of Environmental Noise and Vibration". Groups have been set up to conduct research on "Technology for Mitigating Mechanical Sounds". We will conduct various activities and play a leading role in research on sound and vibration regarding the environment in the field of mechanical engineering.

Refuse Processing Technology

The Department is currently developing measures to reduce dioxin emissions resulting from the processing of wastes, and technologies for the next-generation waste incinerators such as the fluidized bed gasified melting system or pyrolysis melting process, gasifying & direct melting furnace, high efficiency power system by heat generated from burning wastes, and recycling of wastes.

Air and Water Preservation Technology

As to the air preservation sector, the Department is developing technologies for controlling NOx and SOx generated by combustion, CO2 fixation, and the reduction of NOx concentration in air. In the water preservation sector, the Department is also developing technologies for treatment and utilization of water for the construction of a circulation type society in addition to addressing various environmental problems, ranging from eutrophication of closed water area to endocrine disrupters.

Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology

The Department is developing technologies for clarifying the characteristics of refrigerants, energy saving, heat conservation, effective energy utilization, environmental assessment, co-generation systems, renewable energy, and fuel cells. In the Department, a Research Committee (A-TS09-02) on "Numerical Environmental Engineering" - Chairperson J.Onishi : Osaka Electro-Communication University - is organized from November in 2000 till October in 2005. Furthermore, the Department holds the Japanese Joint Conference on Air-conditioning and Refrigeration once a year.
