Rolling Stock Test Plant for Shinkansen

This device is a stationary simulation test device installed by the former JNR for studying the running condition of railway vehicles. In addition to real vehicle tests (maximum speed 250 km/h) in which one railway car would be mounted on this test device manufactured by Hitachi Ltd. and installed in 1959, tests in which only one bogie is mounted (maximum speed 350 km/h) are also possible. Tests with Tokaido Shinkansen prototype bogies under development at the time commenced in 1960, the results of which considerably contributed to the development of Shinkansen vehicles, such as determining bogie specifications.
