MECHANICAL ENGINEERING HERITAGE NO.132

Suzulight SS

The Suzulight is a kei four-wheel car developed by Saburo Suzuki under the guidance of Michio Suzuki, founder of Suzuki Motor Co., Ltd. (now Suzuki Motor Corporation) and modeled after the Lloyd of the German Lloyd automobile industry. In 1954, a prototype was developed, and the Suzulight SS was completed by improving defects identified from hill-climbing tests in Hakone. The Suzulight SS is a kei car created with innovative technologies such as a monocoque body, four-wheel independent suspension, and front-engine front-wheel drive system, equipped with an air-cooled two-stroke engine (displacement, 359 cc; maximum output, 16PS).
When the Suzulight SS was introduced, Japan experienced the dawn of the kei car era. Although several similar models exist, such as the Auto Sandal manufactured by Nippon Auto Sandal Motors, the Suzulight SS is a full-fledged kei car equipped in the same manner as a regular passenger car. The Suzulight SS was manufactured in accordance with Japan's own standards (Ministry of Transport Ordinance No. 36: enacted in 1949), and Suzuki Motor Co., Ltd. successfully mass produced it on a manufacturer's basis. The car is a pioneer in kei cars.
