Foreword

Five divisions of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers such as Machine Design and Tribology Division, Design and Systems Division, Manufacturing and Machine Tool Division, Manufacturing Systems Division and Information, Intelligence and Precision Equipments Division of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (refer to as “five divisions” hereafter) have decided to issue an electronic journal called Journal of Advanced Mechanical Design, Systems and Manufacturing (JAMDSM). Taking advantage of this opportunity, we would like to explain the background and purpose of the issue of JAMDMS, and at the same time, we would deeply appreciate our members’ positive paper contributions to the journal. The acceptance of contributions to the journal will start from October 2006.

The English paper journal, JSME International Journal issued by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers had been required to be drastically improved because of problems including the number of papers contributed, its impact factor and financial aspects along with the diversification of members’ requirements and the globalization of technology. In these circumstances, the Editorial Committee of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers established the Committee for the Review of Paper Publication Patterns in 2002. After repeated discussion from various standpoints, the committee decided to stop the publication of the JSME International Journal and transform it to an electronic journal on a division-by-division basis.

Following the decision, the five divisions of the Machine Design and Tribology Division, the Design and Systems Division, the Manufacturing and Machine Tool Division, the Manufacturing and Machine Tool Division, the Manufacturing Systems Division and the Information, Intelligence and Precision Equipment Division agreed to issue an appealing English journal in cooperation among the five divisions, putting emphasis on the strong relationship among the five divisions, and started discussions and preparations for the issue of new journal. The Preparatory Committee for Five Division’s Joint English Journal Transition was established in April 2005. In this committee, the purpose of the English journal, editorial organization, editorial process, etc were discussed for the issue of the five divisions’ joint English Journal. At last, the composition of the Five Divisions’ Joint English Journal Editorial Committee and the editorial policy by the editorial system were approved in the 85th Five divisions’ each Steering Committee. Since then, the preparation for the issue in January 2007 has been underway.

The five divisions, by putting emphasis on “manufacturing” as the mainstream of their study, have been traditionally highly active in international activities including numerous international conventions held by each division. However, in order to correspond to the recent diversification and complication of manufacturing, it is important to have close collaboration among the divisions. The name of the English journal represents the expectation for the innovation of “Manufacturing” which can be realized by the “Mechanical System”, “Designed” with “Advanced” information and knowledge based upon collaboration among the five divisions.

As above mentioned, we believe that the English journal will develop into an influential international journal with a high citation index and an impact factor by (1) consolidating the activities of the five divisions closely related to “manufacturing” and (2) editing and issuing a paper journal enhanced in both quality and quantity through a severe and prompt peer review system.

  • The characteristics of the five division joint English journal are as follows:
  • (1) The Name of Journal:
Journal of Advanced Mechanical Design, Systems, and Manufacturing (JAMDSM)
  • (2) Editorial Framework:
The editorial system is employed, whereas editors select peer reviewers, urge them to review papers promptly and make inquiries to authors. The editorial committee of JAMDSM consists of each English Journal editorial committee of the five divisions.
  • (3) Issuing Method of the Journal
The electronic Journal is issued through J-STAGE (http://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/browse/) run by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (free Access).
  • (4) The submission of Papers (refer to “Paper Submission Method” regulated by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers)
Paper submitters will submit their papers through an online paper submission system (http://www.editorialmanager.com/journal-jsme/).
  • (5) The process until Papers are Issued (refer to “Proofreading and Editorial Manual” regulated by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers)
The process from paper submission to issue should be promptly implemented through the introduction of online proofreading and issuing system, and the proofreading result will be noticed within three months after the paper is submitted. Each paper is uploaded to J-STAGE by an uploading system upon completion of proofreading in response to submitters’ requirements.
  • (6) Vol. and No.
The journal is issued four times a year and each issue is numbered based on the issuing years and issuing numbers. The papers are sequentially uploaded and sorted to numbers by appropriate periods (basically every three months). The Vols. and Nos. are expressed as Vol. X, No.1; Vol. X, No.2, Vol. X, No.3 and Vol. X, No.4.
Deadlines for paper submission are the ends of Jan, April, July and October (only as a guide). The periods for paper acceptance are from August to October, from November to January, from February to April and from May to July (only as a guide). However, these starting months for paper reception are only a guide, and papers are actually accepted at any time. The Nos. of issue may be changed for editing reasons.
  • (7) Special Issue
For the special issue projected by each division, the papers to be edited are put together in a No. In this case, the Nos. for regular issues of papers are moved down one after another.
  • (8) Contents which can be Posted (refer to“How to Write Papers”regulated by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers)
Papers can be posted with full colors, animation, sound file and electronic appendix (linked separately to papers).
  • (9) Paper Publication Fee (Refer to “Paper Publication Fee” regulated by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers)
According to the standard of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, Paper Publication Fee is shown in http://www.jsme.or.jp/publish/jamdsm/fee.html.
  • (10) Collection of Paper Contributions
  • The journal is collecting the contributions of original papers, outlooks and explanation papers on the study fields relating to the filed of Table 1 shown in the above site.
JAMDSM (the Five Division English Journal) consists of each English journal editorial committee of the five divisions.
Chairman of JAMDSM Editorial Committee and chairman of the editorial committee of the five divisions are as follows:
    • ・Machine Design and Tribology Division: Hatsuhiko USAMI
    • ・Design and Systems Division: Masashi OKUBO
    • ・Manufacturing and Machine Tool Division: Atsushi MATSUBARA
    • ・Manufacturing System Division: Hideki AOYAMA
    • ・Information, Intelligence and Precision Equipment Division: Gen HASHIGUCHI

We thank the members' kind support.
