Five divisions of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers such as Machine Design and Tribology Division, Design and Systems Division, Manufacturing and Machine Tool Division, Manufacturing Systems Division and Information, Intelligence and Precision Equipments Division of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (refer to as “five divisions” hereafter) have decided to issue an electronic journal called Journal of Advanced Mechanical Design, Systems and Manufacturing (JAMDSM). Taking advantage of this opportunity, we would like to explain the background and purpose of the issue of JAMDMS, and at the same time, we would deeply appreciate our members’ positive paper contributions to the journal. The acceptance of contributions to the journal will start from October 2006.
The English paper journal, JSME International Journal issued by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers had been required to be drastically improved because of problems including the number of papers contributed, its impact factor and financial aspects along with the diversification of members’ requirements and the globalization of technology. In these circumstances, the Editorial Committee of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers established the Committee for the Review of Paper Publication Patterns in 2002. After repeated discussion from various standpoints, the committee decided to stop the publication of the JSME International Journal and transform it to an electronic journal on a division-by-division basis.
Following the decision, the five divisions of the Machine Design and Tribology Division, the Design and Systems Division, the Manufacturing and Machine Tool Division, the Manufacturing and Machine Tool Division, the Manufacturing Systems Division and the Information, Intelligence and Precision Equipment Division agreed to issue an appealing English journal in cooperation among the five divisions, putting emphasis on the strong relationship among the five divisions, and started discussions and preparations for the issue of new journal. The Preparatory Committee for Five Division’s Joint English Journal Transition was established in April 2005. In this committee, the purpose of the English journal, editorial organization, editorial process, etc were discussed for the issue of the five divisions’ joint English Journal. At last, the composition of the Five Divisions’ Joint English Journal Editorial Committee and the editorial policy by the editorial system were approved in the 85th Five divisions’ each Steering Committee. Since then, the preparation for the issue in January 2007 has been underway.
The five divisions, by putting emphasis on “manufacturing” as the mainstream of their study, have been traditionally highly active in international activities including numerous international conventions held by each division. However, in order to correspond to the recent diversification and complication of manufacturing, it is important to have close collaboration among the divisions. The name of the English journal represents the expectation for the innovation of “Manufacturing” which can be realized by the “Mechanical System”, “Designed” with “Advanced” information and knowledge based upon collaboration among the five divisions.
As above mentioned, we believe that the English journal will develop into an influential international journal with a high citation index and an impact factor by (1) consolidating the activities of the five divisions closely related to “manufacturing” and (2) editing and issuing a paper journal enhanced in both quality and quantity through a severe and prompt peer review system.
