MECHANICAL ENGINEERING HERITAGE NO.97

Steam Locomotives Preserved at Kyoto Railway Museum and Related Objects

JR West opened the Kyoto Railway Museum in April 2016. Compared to the museums of other railway companies, the greatest difference is that 23 steam locomotives (built between 1880 and 1948) are displayed along with a large-scale round house (fan-shaped engine shed), a turntable, and locomotive maintenance records. Eight of these locomotives are in working order. Moreover, the inspection warehouse overhead traveling crane, built in 1915, and associated tools used as inspection equipment are still used in actual operation. These pieces of equipment demonstrate the changes in the connection between steam locomotives and society in Japan resulting from changes in the modernization of power used in railways.
