STECH is the International Conference on Speed-up and Sustainable Technology for Railway and Maglev Systems sponsored by JSME (Japanese Society of Mechanical Engineers). Followed by the success of the previous STECH symposiums held in Yokohama (Japan, 1993), Birmingham (UK, 1996), Tokyo (Japan, 2003), Chengdu (China, 2006), Niigata (Japan, 2009), Seoul (Korea, 2012), Chiba (Japan, 2015), Barcelona (Spain, 2018), the 9th international Symposium on Speed-up and Sustainable Technology for Railway and Maglev Systems (STECH2021) will be held as a hybrid (real and virtual) conference during November 23-25, 2021. It is of considerable importance to distribute latest railway technology for researches all over the world. In view of this, it has been decided to publish the special issue of STECH2021 in MEJ (Mechanical Engineering Journal) that is the international scientific journal of JSME. The authors of STECH2021 short papers are encouraged to submit the full paper to this special issue.

2021年11月23日～25日に千葉県の幕張メッセ国際会議場及びオンラインで開催した第9回鉄道技術国際シンポジウム(9th International Symposium on Speed-up and Sustainable Technology for Railway and Maglev Systems (STECH2021)）の中で発表された優秀な論文を選び，特集号を企画する．

Recent Advances in Materials and Processing 2022

Service environment of materials is getting severer monotonously. In order to keep human society comfortable, conventional materials are replaced by higher performance materials or suitable materials are newly developed. The material processing technology is also growing rapidly. The conventional materials with the new processing technology can extend the allowable range of services and can find new service fields. On the other hand, sustainable procurement (or green procurement), as a public policy, must be considered seriously to select materials in industrial products. From these backgrounds, the JSME International Conference on Materials and Processing 2022 (ICM&P 2022) will be held from November 6 to 10, 2022, at Japan Jichikaikan Hall, Naha, Okinawa, Japan as an international activity of the Materials and Processing (M&P) Division, JSME. This conference will be meaningful for many researchers and scientists to exchange their knowledge and experience with each other and to establish relationships for collaboration. The special issue of Mechanical Engineering Journal, entitled "Recent Advances in Materials and Processing", will welcome to be submitted by the authors who presented research works at the above conference. The submitted manuscript will be peer-reviewed again in accordance with the editorial policy of JSME.

Nuclear Energy the Future Zero Carbon Power

The 29th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE29) is held in Shenzhen, China and virtual on August 8 – 12, 2022, under the sponsorships of JSME (Japanese Society of Mechanical Engineers), ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), and CNS (Chinese Nuclear Society). With the conference theme “Nuclear Energy the Future Zero Carbon Powe”, numbers of presentations and vigorous discussions were made by the experts from the world on various topics that include; plant operation and engineering, advanced reactors and small modular reactors, nuclear fuels and fuel cycle, codes and standards, thermal hydraulics and computational fluid dynamics, decommissioning, beyond design basis and nuclear safety, risk informed management and regulation, and verification and validation. It is of significant importance for JSME to disseminate to and share with the global community the latest researches and discussions on the importance of nuclear energy and nuclear safety issues. For these purposes, it has been planned to issue a special issue of MEJ (Mechanical Engineering Journal) featuring ICONE29. The authors of ICONE29 papers are encouraged to submit their papers, augmented and/or revised, to this special issue.

日本機械学会、米国機械学会、中国原子力学会が主催する第29回原子力工学国際会議（29th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE29)）が、2022年8月8日～12日に中国深圳での現地及びバーチャル会議のハイブリッド形式で開催される。ICONE29では、原子力工学に関連したプラント運転保守、原子燃料と材料、次世代炉、燃料サイクル、原子炉安全性、熱水力、計算力学、廃炉、設計基準を超える事象対応、リスク評価、V&V等について、各国の専門家が活発な議論を行う。本会議において報告される今後の原子力エネルギー利用の重要性、安全性等に関する研究発表や議論を、日本機械学会誌を通して全世界に発信することは極めて重要な責務である。そこで、ICONE29で発表された講演論文をベースに本特集号テーマに関する研究論文を募る特集号を企画する。

Power and energy system division holds International Conference on Power Engineering (ICOPE) collaborating with American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Chinese Society of Power Engineering by yearly. The 16th ICOPE (ICOPE-2023) had been held in Kyoto in May, 2023 hosted by JSME, co-located with ICONE30. ICOPE covers wide field related on power engineering except for nuclear power. Those are large scale thermal power system, natural energy including hydro, solar, wind, geothermal, and so on, and distributed energy system including combined heat and power, fuel cell. And, energy supply and utilization system including fuel supply, energy demand levelling using energy storage, heat pump system, waste heat recovery. The focus of ICONE is on the technical state-of-the-art and the status of nuclear power around the world. This special issue invites the papers with the contents presented in the ICOPE-2023 or ICONE30 after polishing based on the discussion in the conference.
