The age of artificial intelligence (AI) is upon us. In academia, as in every profession, AI has been a disruptive force. Academic journals remain wary of the potential misuse of AI tools by researchers and, as a result, have adopted regulations that limit their use.

This raises an important question: how should AI tools evolve so that they can be reliably and safely used by researchers to fast-track manuscript preparation?
