Critical conversations in science

第11 回 The Complex Relationship Between Research and Public Policy

Deep Sarkar

Researchers from diverse backgrounds may have different motivations, but are typically united by the same early-career dream: ‘to make a difference’. Recent scientific breakthroughs that have significantly impacted the society—like Ozempic (semaglutide)(1) or the Covid vaccine(2) —have demonstrated how science can transform society. Yet, outside of global crises, the link between research and public policy remains complex.

Researchers and policymakers—bridging the gap

Recent discussions on the research—policy relationship often center on how to better integrate scientific evidence into policymaking. A key concern is the limited interaction between researchers and policymakers(3). While researchers prioritize objective evidence, policymakers often focus on political considerations and public perception—especially when urgent decisions are needed and scientific evidence is emergent(4)(5). These differing timelines and priorities create a gap. The question is: how can we bridge it?
